NCSO® & NHSA™ Designation Exam

Everything you need to know before you write

Once you've completed all your program requirements, the final step is your designation exam. This page covers what to expect, how to prepare, and what happens on exam day.

Not sure if you're ready to register? Head back to the NCSO® page or NHSA™ page to review your program requirements first.

Before you register

All NCSO® or NHSA™ program requirements must be complete before you can register for an exam session — including your compulsory and elective courses and your LSE™ Proficiency.

When you're ready, register for an exam session through your MyLearning account.

About the exam

The designation exam is a national examination written by the CFCSA. It is the same exam for both the NCSO® and NHSA™ designations.

  • 120 multiple-choice questions
  • 2 hours to complete
  • 75% passing mark required
  • Closed-book — no notes or reference materials permitted
  • Results are shared as pass or fail

How online proctoring works

Your exam is completed online through Integrity Advocate's proctoring platform. You never have to leave the exam environment — the process is seamless, privacy compliant, and non-invasive. It works on any current laptop or desktop.

Technology requirements

  • Desktop or laptop with Google Chrome installed
  • Windows 10 or higher
  • Functioning webcam
  • Stable internet connection (5–7 Mbps minimum)
  • Valid government-issued photo ID

Exam conduct guidelines

Before you write, review the Online Proctoring Guidelines and Conduct Expectations. You're responsible for understanding and following these rules. Violations may result in your exam being considered invalid, and you would need to rewrite.

How to prepare

A downloadable exam overview is available to help guide your studying. It outlines the key content areas the exam covers.

ACSA also offers a free 2-hour virtual Exam Prep session through MyLearning. It's a helpful orientation before exam day — but make sure you've also reviewed your course material thoroughly. The prep session is a starting point, not a substitute for studying.

If you don't pass

There is a mandatory 14-day waiting period between exam attempts. When you're ready to rewrite, register for a rewrite exam session through your MyLearning account.
